Today’s theme for the Spoonflower Design-A-Day challenge was steampunk. When I think of steampunk, I think of gears and people in goggles. Goggles weren’t really calling to me today, so I started thinking about gears.
I thought I could use a gear as the center of a flower, then build the petals out from there, so that’s what I sketched. I made my petals spiral, kind of like a spring.
I took this picture into Illustrator and started tracing and making that gear truly round. As I started creating a repeating pattern, I added a few additional gears as an accent around the flower. Then I realized that the gears themselves we actually very flower-like. I scrapped my coiled petals, and made some different variations of the gear. They kind of look like something you could create with a Spirograph, which is right up my alley.
I used vaguely metallic colors for my gears, then used a soft teal background to bring it all together.
Until next time,
